Guide for Parents
This plan was developed using the ALSDE guiding principles covered in the Roadmap to Reopening Alabama Schools.
This plan is subject to change in accordance with the Alabama Department of Public Health recommendations and Gadsden City Schools. As guidelines are updated, the plan will be updated accordingly and parents will be notified.
Area of Consideration Safety Guidelines
General School Procedures and Health Guidelines
Masks/Shields- masks and shields are required by students grades 2-5.
Social Distancing- will vary by classroom square footage and number of students. The maximum amount of social distance that the space allows will be adhered. Consideration has been given to all school procedures, such as waiting in line and restroom breaks to ensure proper social distancing.
Water Bottles- water fountains will be closed. Students may bring multiple disposable water bottles to keep with them throughout the school day. Must have their name on them.
Temperature Checks- Parents encouraged to screen students every morning prior to the school day. Each classroom teacher will conduct temperature checks upon entering the classroom. Any child with a temperature of 100.4 or above will be sent to the school nurse until a parent can come pick up the child. If a student runs a temperature or shows symptoms throughout the school day, they will follow the same procedure. Symptoms of potential illness include but are not limited to:
Loss of taste or smell
Transitions- the schedule will be revised to ensure only one classroom is transitioning to restrooms, lunchroom, PE and elsewhere at separate times. Students will be social-distanced while walking in line, following markings in their classrooms and hallways.
Arrival time is no earlier than 7:35AM (previously 7:15AM). Staff and students will sanitize hands upon arrival at one of the sanitizing stations placed throughout the school. 7:35-7:50 students will remain seated and safely spaced in their designated arrival areas:
• 1st, 2nd and 4th grade students will enter through the door by the lunchroom and grab their breakfast and report strait to their classroom.
• Kindergarten, 3rd, and 5th grade students will enter the gym and remain in the gym until they are called.
• All teachers and staff without a homeroom will be responsible for opening car doors in the designated areas.
Teachers will be monitoring all areas.
Breakfast will be served in the lunchroom and gym beginning at 7:35AM. Breakfast will be a grab and go students will report to their designated areas after they have received their breakfast.
Resource Classes (Art, Music, Computer, etc)
Students will not travel to a resource classroom, such as music class. Those teachers will be scheduled to come into the classrooms to conduct classes. The schedule allows for proper sanitization in between classes. No sharing of instruments will take place.
Classroom instruction will be modified to ensure students are minimizing contact, not sharing supplies, and adhering to practical social distance guidelines.
All classrooms will be using devices and the Google Classroom platform. In the event of a closure, each classroom will transition to virtual learning via Google Classroom to continue instruction.
No lockers will be used. Backpacks will be placed on the back of the student’s chair.
Pre- K, Kindergarten and 1st grade students will eat in the lunchroom and the schedule will be modified to ensure that students can be seated with proper social distance between them during their lunchtime.
2nd-5th grade students will eat lunch in their classrooms or outside. If they purchase a school lunch, the lunch will be delivered to their classroom.
Students cards will be used to enter their lunch number. A staff member will be assigned to do this for Breakfast and Lunch.
PE will take place outdoors in order to adhere to social distance guidelines. Students will receive PE each day that weather permits. If they cannot have PE outside, they will have an indoor PE in the gym.
Students will remain in their classrooms until they are called by walkie-talkie to be picked up. Upon completion of carline, students enrolled in EDGE will be dismissed by classroom to go to their designated area for EDGE.
Students will be called one at a time or by family groups to enter their vehicles outside in the car line.
The EDGE program will still take place with additional safety measures in place. Please refer to their plan.
In order to minimize potential exposures, no visitors will be allowed to enter classrooms or attend lunch. Parents may schedule virtual meetings with teachers during teacher planning times. No outside goods, such as birthday items, are allowed. No visitors will be allowed in the building.
School events will follow the Alabama Department of Public Health and CDC recommendations on gatherings, and are subject to approval by Gadsden City Schools School Board.
Procedures for sick students
Students that become ill during the school day will go to the school nurse’s office. If they are showing symptoms of illness, they will be monitored in an isolated room until a parent can come and pick the child up. Please refer to the system plan to see protocol for students that test positive with COVID19.
Extra sanitization measures
All areas of the school will be sanitized throughout the school day and at the end of every school day.
Hand Sanitizing stations will be installed throughout the school.
Students will be encouraged to wash hands frequently, and taught proper procedures by classroom teachers and the school nurse.
The nurse’s office will have a well-child area for routine medications and other needs. There will be a separate room for sick children exhibiting COVID19 symptoms.
Restroom breaks will be carefully scheduled and monitored by classroom teachers to ensure students are not in the restroom at the same time. If a student goes to the restroom individually please notify Mr. Goodwin so that the restroom can be cleaned.
